2018 London Biennale: Puerto Rican Pavilion
The Puerto Rico Pavilion is an exploration of ideas of nation and identity, and the symbols that represent them. “How many times have you felt that your shield, flag, or passport isn’t representative of your identity? How can we define a contemporary national identity?”, asked Miguel Miranda, Chief Designer of Muuaaa. “Even though these symbols are rigid, our identities need to be malleable; they are soft.” Muuaaa Design Studio’s interactive installation in the 2018 London Design Biennale is designed to generate individualized identities to all of its users. Visitors select up to five identity markers or images that best represents them. The selection goes through an algorithm that process the information and generates a final image. The result is an interpretation of a contemporary flag or code of arms; it contains a mix of shapes, symbols and colors. This new personalized “flag” is pressed on site into t-shirts in an island-shaped table in the center of the pavilion.
